The Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commission, (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, has said that the protection and empowerment of the over 174.9 million active telecom subscribers in Nigeria remains a priority to the Commission.

He said this is in line with the Commission's belief that the consumer remains the king always and particularly so for the telecom industry.

Danbatta reiterated these commitments at the Third Edition of the 2019 Consumer Conversation Forum organised by the NCC's Enugu Zonal Office (ENZO). The forum was organised for the staff and students of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Umuahia, Abia State on Friday, September 20, 2019.

Represented by Emilia Nwokoro, Controller Enugu Zonal Office, Danbatta assured the participants that the Commission would continue "to inform, empower and protect the telecom consumers so that no one takes advantage of them."

Participants were informed about ongoing programmes and projects of the Commission targeted at empowering and protecting the over 174.9 million Telecom consumers in the country. These include the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) 2442 Short Code to control unsolicited text message they receive on their mobile devices, the 622 Toll-Free Number instituted to escalate complaints to the Commission on any seevice-related issues, the mobile number portability (MNP) which enables a subscriber to migrate to a different network without losing his mobile number, the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) and how to handle challenges connected to SIM swap, as well as SIM card Registration procedures.

The forum afforded the participants, who are all telecoms consumers, the opportunity to ask questions on many aspects of telecom services. The questions were entertained, and satisfactory answerered by the officials of the Commission at the forum.
