The staff of the Kano Zonal Office of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) joined others residents in Kano metropolis to celebrate the recent Eid Fitr at the popular durbar.
Shuaibu Swade, Controller NCC Zonal Office in Kano stated that he mobilised his colleagues to participate in the durbar because the occasion provided an opportunity to reach out to an unusually large number of people at one time to create more awareness about NCC activities, particularly to inform the citizens about how they can manage some of the challenges they may face as telecom consumers.
The NCC staff also visited the Kofar Mata Dye Pits established in 1498, the Dawanau Grains Market, and the Rice Farmers Association in Kura Local Government Area.
The dye centre has been in existence for five centuries and has been declare a heritage centre by UNESCO, the Dawanau Market is the largest grains trading point in West Africa, and the rural farmers involved in grains production also constitute the majority of the farming groups in satellite communities of Kano.
Swade affirmed that using online resources to promote crafts and trade as well as agriculture, which was at the heart of the discussion with Haruna Dye, Secretary and Chief Exhibitor at the Dye Pits; Hassan Ibrahim Karaye, Chairman at the Dawanau Market; and the leadership of Kura Rice Farmers Association, was quite significant.
"Engaging people on how the Internet can promote trades and businesses through e-commerce is consistent with the Commission's agenda of promoting ICT innovation and investment opportunities". Swade noted to emphasise how such enlightenment programmes by NCC can nudge those in small businesses to overcome the challenges of production and marketing of their products.
