The rustic village of Aujaran Alkali in Gezawa Local Government of Kano State, recently hosted staff of the Kano Zonal Office of the Nigerian Communications Commission who visited the countryside to engage the community on its experiences with telecommunications services.

Though the village receives network signals of two mobile network operators (MNOs), Yakubu Muhammed, the village head told the NCC team led by Shuaibu Swade, Controller of Kano Zonal Office, that members of the community who subscribe to telecommunications services are embarrassed by the trove of unsolicited messages received on their mobile phones and other devices.

The village head also expressed concerns about possible health implications of telecom masts.

Swade, in his response allayed the fears of Alhaji Yakubu Muhammed and members of the community. Swade stated that the information bandied about negative health consequences of telecom masts are unfounded because no scientific study has established a correlation between telecom masts and ill-health. He advised the villagers not to allow themselves to be lured into health-seeking behaviours on account of such stories. Swade also told the community to call NCC Toll Free Line, 622, for complaints on quality of service and any other challenge they may experience in their use of telecom services.
